The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) is an agency within the Department of Transportation (DOT), and one of its modes of transportation. The FTA is charged with upholding federal drug and alcohol testing requirements for the part of the transportation industry that is involved with providing and servicing mass transportation to the public. This covers all public transit systems, including buses, ferries, trolleys, light rail, commuter rail, and subways. To protect the safety of the public, a FTA drug test is required for many public transportation employees.

Like other DOT modes, the FTA compliance requirements can be quite complex. When your agency works with AZC Drug Testing, however, we’ll ensure that all of your requirements are met in full. We provide comprehensive and customizable FTA drug test programs to keep your public transit system in compliance, and to uphold public safety standards.

Who Is Required to Take a FTA Drug Test?

If you are an employer who receives financial assistance from the FTA, then you are required to implement a FTA drug test program. Likewise, subcontractors are required to implement a testing program if they are hired to perform a safety-sensitive function. A safety-sensitive function includes, but is not limited to:

Not all subcontractors may be required to test. If you’re unsure of how the FTA regulations may apply to you and your subcontractors, our program managers will be happy to discuss your situation with you.

Why Choose AZC Drug Testing for Your FTA Compliance Needs?

At AZC Drug Testing, we offer a FTA drug testing consortium program that is ideal for smaller organizations that receive FTA funding. Our consortium program is a workable testing solution for those without sufficient employees for random drug and alcohol testing. We also develop and implement custom FTA drug test programs for larger organizations. Entrust your compliance needs to our experienced team of knowledgeable professionals.

Testing Procedures

Random drug and alcohol testing is a crucial component of DOT regulations, and all random testing is included with our consortium fee. We apply a scientific, industry-accepted method for selecting random testing subjects, and we handle everything from collection to notifications to follow-ups. AZC Drug Testing also provides pre-employment and post-accident testing as required by DOT regulations. All drug screens are facilitated by our national network of collection sites, SAMHSA-certified laboratories, and Medical Review Officer (MRO) services. All certified results are delivered via our secure reporting system.

Reporting and Documentation

AZC Drug Testing provides all required semi-annual and annual drug testing summary reports as well as customized report packages for your company. Our program managers ensure that you receive all documentation your company needs for compliance.

Audit Support

Our consortium programs are well-regarded among federal auditors. We provide complete audit support services for your company as well as the peace of mind that comes from knowing your FTA drug test program will meet the standards of all DOT and FTA requirements. Our program managers have extensive experience working with DOT auditors across all modes of transportation.

Company Training

All DOT modes require company training and education programs on substance use and misuse.
